Who is Saturn? What is Saturn?

Mythological deity who was of great importance to the Greeks and Romans, Saturn was an embodied God who received devotion through temple worship and sacrifices.

Today, we consider Saturn to be the planetary body in the sky, the ringed planet who is best known for his photogenic shape.

What does Saturn represent Astrologically?

In astrological terms, Saturn’s representation in popular astrology outlets of recent years has been somewhat limited, focussing mostly on Saturn’s ability to impart discipline and harsh lessons to those who fall under his impact through transit.

From what is shown in ancient, historic source material, Saturn was respected and honoured in ancient times because it was believed that Saturn worship would bring benefits such as greater wealth, status, power and good fortune. However in contemporary discourse today, the focus is very much on Saturn’s harsh impact whenever the planet passes over specific points in a person’s birth chart.

Saturn is known to bring tests and challenges, which can express themselves through difficulties with health, work or relationships. The idea is that Saturn tests the foundations of what we have built. For some, a Saturn transit can bring rewards such as greater status in the workplace in the form of promotions, more money or the stabilising of romantic relationships.

Saturn rules over elders, teachers, authority figures (including government officials).

What are the important Saturn cycles and how can they impact me?

Notably, Saturn’s 29 year cycle has gotten a lot of publicity in the online space since the great Jupiter-Saturn conjunction of 2020. Saturn’s complete cycle is known as a “Saturn Return.” We experience a few of them in our lives, depending on how long we live. Each time Saturn returns to the place he was at our birth, we receive a direct interaction with the ringed planet’s qualities, and it is usually a time of great growth, maturity and challenges that seek to test our perseverance.

Saturn takes roughly 2.5 years to make his way through any given sign, the first Saturn return begins around 28 years old, concluding just before we reach 30, although the effects can be felt for several months before and after these landmark ages.

What is Saturn retrograde?

Every year, Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune station retrograde. However due to Saturn’s dominion over such important life matters as, well….our foundations, we’re going to focus on Saturn in this particular essay.

Saturn stationed retrograde on July 27th in the sign of Pisces, Revati nakshatra. This adds some extra edge to the Saturn retrograde of 2026, because Pisces is a sign of expansion, free-flowing creativity and surrender. Saturn’s requirement for tenacity, grit and discipline means that while in Pisces until mid 2027, we may have a harder time accessing those lovely compassionate, Piscean qualities that are gentle, soft and make life a little easier.

For anyone with Pisces planets in their birth chart, Saturn’s retrograde can require them to adopt a slower pace, and spend the next few months until December consolidating, rather than pushing ahead with ambitious new projects.

What does Saturn retrograde mean?

What signs are most affected this year?

Taurus, Pisces (those born at the very end of Revati nakshatra in sidereal zodiac), Virgo and Sagittarius are the signs who will feel Saturn’s impact most this year. Those signs in particular are being asked to step up and embrace a higher level of maturity and responsibility this year.

The good news is that for anyone with ambitious plans that have a projected long-term impact upon their lives, Saturn retrograde until December 10th will allow for the internal maturity to develop, the emotional preparation and healing of the past, so that once Saturn regains direct motion, the plans in question can unfold and bloom without obstacles.

How to ensure Saturn retrograde gives me more benefits than trouble between now and December?

Pay respects to teachers and elders. Honour limitations and respect boundaries. Embody your highest potential through hard work, while paying attention to any signs of fatigue in the body and respecting your own need for rest and recuperation. Saturn retrograde can be a time when our efforts of the first seven months of 2026 start to show fruit in subtle and perhaps invisible ways.

Rest assured.

If things appear to be moving more slowly for you than usual, this year is a completion of a grand collective cycle, of which your personal life plays a part.
